Waste Management and Municipality of the District of
West Hants Finalize Partnership
West Hants, Nova Scotia - Waste
Management and the Municipality of the District of West Hants
announced today the finalization of a partnership for the development
and operation of a new second-generation landfill site.
Waste Management (WM) will build the new landfill in strict accordance
with the new Nova Scotia Department of Environment and Labour
landfill regulations. Second generation landfills include a double
liner system and comprehensive management systems for ground and
surface water as well as landfill gas. Over the life of the contract,
WM will spend over $25 million in capital investments on the landfill.
The new landfill, which has been granted construction
approval by the Nova Scotia Department of Environment and Labour,
will commence operation on January 2, 2006 and accept approximately
46,000 tonnes of non-hazardous solid waste per year. The new site,
from a geological perspective, is an excellent location for the
landfill.
"This partnership with Waste Management
will ensure that the residents of West Hants receive environmentally
sound and affordable waste disposal services for the next 25 years,"
said Richard Dauphinee, Warden of the Municipality. "We're
proud to have West Hants leading the way in providing advanced
waste disposal solutions while enhancing the current level of
service for our residents and businesses."
"The innovative approach taken by the Municipality
of West Hants and Waste Management will ensure that our community
will have an ultra-modern and economical waste system in place
for the next 25 years," said Ron Russell, MLA for Hants West
and Nova Scotia's Minister of Transportation and Public Works.
"We are excited to be working with the Municipality
on this exciting project," said Marc Fox, WM Market Area
General Manager for Atlantic Canada. "We are looking forward
to expanding our role in the Nova Scotia waste management industry.
This partnership with West Hants is an innovative model that serves
the community very well."
